Today, my heart feels heavy as I share the heartbreaking news that James Van Der Beek has passed away at the age of 48 after a courageous battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer, surrounded by love and faith.
For so many of us who grew up watching Dawson’s Creek, James wasn’t just a star — he was a friend we invited into our living rooms every week, a character who made us feel seen, hopeful, and understood.
From his iconic role as Dawson Leery, the earnest teen filmmaker dreaming big, to his memorable performances in Varsity Blues, CSI: Cyber, Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23, and countless guest appearances, James brought heart, vulnerability, and authenticity to every role.
He didn’t just act — he connected. He made us laugh, made us feel nostalgic, and reminded us of what it’s like to chase dreams with passion. I idolized him not just for his talent, but for his ability to wear his heart on his sleeve and inspire others to do the same.
Co-stars and fans alike are mourning his loss today. Clarissa Explains It All alum Melissa Joan Hart shared how he was more than just a co-star — he was a kind, warm-hearted soul and a wonderful father.
James is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly, and their six children — a legacy of love, laughter, and life that extends far beyond the screen.
This is a loss that cuts deep for so many of us who grew up with him on our TVs and in our hearts. But while he’s gone, his work — and the way he made us feel — will live on forever.
Rest in peace, James. Thank you for the stories, the emotions, and the memories. You will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever cherished. ❤️
